The answer to this question has inspired scientists to the new field of Physics where particles are smashed into each other at approximately the speed of light. Yes, if our astronauts travel in a space launch at this speed, then they would reach the moon in just a little above 1.29 seconds.

This equation does not make sense to our reasoning of a system and its parts. Pauline Gagnon, a french physicist at the ATLAS experiment asserts that when atoms are broken down and weighed for their individual parts such as electrons and quarks, they do not equal to the mass of the atom. This has lead the scientists to propose the Higgs particle. Think of it as a t-shirt with no mass which is soaked in water and then its mass increases. In this case the water is the Higgs field. The theory proposed states that an interaction of a particle with the Higgs field produces a drag which gives it mass.

The collisions at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland are intended to give information on this hypothetical event over the next two years of collisions. If the Higgs particle theory is significantly supported, then the excitement of the scientists working will not exceed the excitement when the experiment denies the theory because it will raise curiosity amongst scientists as to what else is our there in nature according to Slawomir Tkaczyk, a Polish physicist on the CMS experiement.
